Description
Project Scientist Series – Materials Characterization User Facility Manager and Staff Scientist, Irvine Materials Research Institute
Salary-Commensurate with experience
POSTING DATE: NOVEMBER 12, 2018 CLOSING DATE: OPEN UNTIL FILLED
DESCRIPTION
The University of California, Irvine is searching for a PhD-level staff scientist to manage the day-to-day operations and help guide the strategic build-out of the new Thermal, Elemental, Mechanical, Physical, and Rheological properties (TEMPR) Facility in the Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI), UC Irvine’s campus-wide institute for materials research. The existing IMRI facilities have a large and growing user community of over 500 academic and industry users, five Ph.D. staff scientists, and a state-of-the-art instrument set that includes five TEMs, four SEMs, two XRDs, two AFMs, an X-ray microscope, an XPS/UPS/ISS/SAM surface science instrument, and a range of other equipment (for details see http://www.imri.uci.edu/). TEMPR is a new IMRI user facility to be opened in a renovated laboratory in early 2019 as UCI’s world-class central user facility for the bulk characterization of biological, soft, and hard materials. The ability to measure T/E/M/P/R properties is important for the R&D of nearly all materials, from liver tissue to nanocrystals, across all disciplines, from biology and medicine to physical sciences and engineering. TEMPR will be the “one stop shop” for researchers seeking to characterize the T/E/M/P/R properties of their materials, whether bone, lung, engineered biomaterial, polymer, bulk metal, composite, nanomaterial powder, macroscopic single crystal, sol-gel product, or other bulk solid.
The successful applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent degree and be an analytical chemist or materials scientist expert in bulk materials characterization with at least five years of in-depth, hands-on experience with techniques such as LA-ICP-MS, combustion analysis, GDMS, DSC/TGA, surface area and pore size analysis, particle size analysis, DMA, size exclusion chromatography, and rheometry. Applicants who are merely casual users of these techniques will not be competitive. Applicants should have mastery of modern instrumentation and methods, data collection, interpretation, and analysis, for different types of samples, as well as expertise building, installing, maintaining, and modifying similar instrumentation. Candidates with expertise operating user facilities are of particular interest. Duties include: operate, maintain, and improve existing and future TEMPR instruments; work with the IMRI team to identify and obtain additional instruments for a phased build-out of the TEMPR Facility; train, supervise, and work directly with users to carry out research; co-manage all aspects of day-to-day IMRI operations; assist in improving and upgrading existing instruments and acquiring new instruments; participate in teaching and outreach activities; assist in the operations of other IMRI facilities as needed; promote IMRI on and off campus; secure grants, perform original research, attend scientific conferences, and publish scientific research in peer-reviewed journals.
The University of California, Irvine is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer advancing inclusive excellence. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, or other protected categories covered by the UC nondiscrimination policy.
